7 Powerful Bible Verses to Pray When You’re Struggling with Mental Health

Oct 11, 2025 | Mental Health, Spiritual Warfare

In the middle of a mental health crisis, it can feel impossible to find the right words to pray. Your mind races, your heart feels heavy, and silence often seems easier than speaking. If that’s where you are today, please hear this: God is not far off. He sees you, He loves you, and His Word is full of promises you can turn into prayers—even when you only have strength to whisper them.

Below are seven life-giving Scriptures (with short, honest prayers) that our church family has clung to during seasons of anxiety, depression, panic attacks, suicidal thoughts, and overwhelming darkness. You do not have to pray fancy words. Just open your Bible (or this page), read the verse out loud if you can, and let these prayers carry what your heart cannot.

1. You are fearfully and wonderfully made

Psalm 139:13-16 (NIV) “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made… All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

Prayer: Father, my mind keeps telling me I’m broken beyond repair, but Your Word says You knit me together with purpose and love. Help me believe that I am still fearfully and wonderfully made—even on the days I can’t feel it. Quiet the lies and let me rest in Your design of me. Amen.

2. You are made in the very image of God

Genesis 1:27 (NIV) “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”

Prayer: Lord, when depression makes me feel worthless, remind me that I carry Your image. My value isn’t based on how productive or “together” I feel today. You declared me very good from the beginning. Breathe Your worth over me again right now. Amen.

3. You do not have to carry this alone

Galatians 6:2 (NIV) “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

Prayer: Jesus, I’m exhausted from pretending I’m okay. Give me courage to let someone in today—a friend, a pastor, a counselor. Thank You that carrying burdens together is part of Your plan, not a sign of weakness. Show me who is safe to reach out to. Amen.

4. You can cast your anxiety on Him because He cares

1 Peter 5:7 (NIV) “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

Prayer: God, I cast every racing thought, every panic attack, every hopeless feeling at Your feet right now. You are big enough to carry what I cannot. Thank You for caring about every detail of my pain. Hold me close today. Amen.

5. His peace can guard your heart and mind

Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV) “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Prayer: Lord, I’m anxious about everything right now. I bring You my fears by name: ___________. Thank You for the things that are still good, even in this darkness: ___________. I receive Your supernatural peace that guards my mind when nothing else can. Amen.

6. Taste and see that the Lord is good

Psalm 34:8 (NIV) “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.”

Prayer: Father, I don’t feel Your goodness right now. Everything tastes bitter. But Your Word invites me to taste again. Be my refuge today. Let me experience even a tiny moment of Your kindness so my soul can remember You are good. Amen.
