If you notice even ONE of these, take it seriously.
As a church family, we believe every life is sacred and worth fighting for. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people ages 10–34 in the U.S., and most people who die by suicide showed warning signs beforehand. Recognizing them can save a life.
- Talking about wanting to die or kill themselves
- Looking for ways to die (searching online, buying a gun, stockpiling pills)
- Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live
- Talking about being a burden to others
- Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
- Sudden mood swings—especially seeming unusually calm or happy after a long depression
- Giving away prized possessions
- Saying goodbye to friends and family as if they won’t see them again
- Withdrawing from friends, family, church, and activities they once loved
- Increased use of alcohol or drugs
- Sleeping too much or too little
- Extreme agitation, rage, or talk of revenge
- Reckless behavior (driving dangerously, unprotected sex, etc.)
- Making final arrangements (updating will, organizing finances)
- Themes of death in conversations, social media posts, art, or journaling
- Previous suicide attempts (the strongest predictor of future attempts)
- Expressing unbearable emotional or physical pain with no visible way out
What to Do the Moment You Notice These Signs
- Take it seriously — 100% of the time.
- Ask directly: “Are you thinking about killing yourself?” (Research shows asking does NOT plant the idea—it opens the door for help.)
- Listen without judgment. Let them talk.
- Stay with them or make sure someone safe stays with them.
- Help them get professional help immediately:
- Call or text 988 (U.S. Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — 24/7)
- Drive them to the nearest emergency room
